This item is a Modern Coaling Tower Kit - N Scale, Walthers
Cornerstone Series 3262. This item is a KIT, that you must assemble and paint.
The new coaling tower was big news when it was built. Back then,
everyone in town could see its tall concrete bunker poking up through the smoke
like a dinosaur's head peering up through the fog. There was no way the old wood
tower could handle the quantities of coal the road's new 2-10-2s and 4-6-6-4s
needed. So the railroad built a new one, capable of holding over 400 tons and
delivering it to as many as three locos at once.
Steel freight and passenger cars, longer trains and faster
schedules required bigger and more powerful steam locos. The larger engines
carried greater quantities of coal and could run further between stops. Major
terminals needed more coaling capacity, so railroads replaced older towers with
new concrete structures. Because they were built late in the steam era, most
served for only a few decades before diesels rendered them obsolete. But
concrete coaling towers were built to last, and a few still stand stripped of
their metal and mechanical parts.
The modern coaling tower kit is based on one of the huge 400 ton
capacity monoliths constructed after 1920. With its tall stature and unique
roofline, it'll be a landmark in any terminal or along the mainline. Designed to
serve three tracks, it's complete with dump house, realistic "concrete" walls,
detailed chutes and more.
